Candle Care: The Art of the Wick
Why should I trim the wick?
Trimming the wick is the secret to a long-lasting, clean-burning candle. A trimmed wick controls the flame size, prevents sooting (black smoke), and ensures your beeswax burns at the correct temperature. This simple step can increase your candle's lifespan.
How short should I trim my wick?
For our Beeswax Tapers, both colonial and standard tapers, we recommend maintaining a wick length of 1/4 inch.
If the wick is too long: The flame may flicker, smoke, or "mushroom," causing the wax to melt too quickly.
If the wick is too short: The flame may "drown" in a pool of wax.
When is the best time to trim?
Always trim the wick before you light the candle. Once the wax has cooled and hardened from a previous burn, use a pair of wick trimmers or sharp scissors to snip the charred tip. Avoid trimming while the wax is liquid to prevent debris from falling into the melt pool.
How do I prevent my taper candles from dripping?
Beeswax is natural and may drip less when burned in a draft-free environment with a properly trimmed wick.
To ensure a pristine, near dripless experience, I recommend using a 7/8" candle follower for the Colonial Style Candles. A proper candle follower will prevent dripping almost entirely.
You can find brass candle followers at 7/8" size on Amazon. Please note, these do not work on our standard tapers.
Keep away from drafts: Ceiling fans, open windows, and air vents can cause an uneven flame.
When should I stop burning my candle?
For safety, stop burning your candle when it reaches the final 1 inch of wax. This prevents the heat from damaging your candle holder or surface.
